Honorable Mentions…

If anything happens I love you…

This voiceless animated short film left me breathless with its beauty and tragedy. It tells the story of parents grieving the loss of their child, using shadows to represent the characters. The film opens with the parents at home, and you can feel their emptiness and sense of drifting apart. As the story progresses, it takes you through various moments of nostalgia, revisiting memories of the child's life, from birth to vacations and a birthday party.

When the shadows of the parents tried to stop their child from going to school, it became clear what had happened. I couldn't stop crying. For anyone who has to lose their child in such a way, the aftermath is devastating.

A love song for Latasha

I always appreciate a movie that teaches me something new, especially about important historical events. A Love Song for Latasha is a short documentary that honors the memory of Latasha Harlins, a 15-year-old girl who was tragically shot in the early 90s. Latasha was killed at a convenience store while buying orange juice by Soon Ja Du, a 49-year-old Korean American. Du was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but received a sentence of only five years of probation, 400 hours of community service, and a fine. This lenient sentence outraged much of L.A.'s Black community. The documentary does an excellent job of commemorating Latasha's life and highlighting the lasting impact her death had on her family and community. It's a devastating and true story of a young life taken too soon.
