Runner up - Saltburn

Oscar Tidbit: This movie was unjustly overlooked at the 2024 Oscars. It deserved nominations in several categories:

  • Best Actor: Barry Keoghan should have taken the spot over Jeffrey Wright from American Fiction. Cillian Murphy rightfully won for Oppenheimer.

  • Best Cinematography: It should have replaced El Conde. Although Oppenheimer won, Poor Things was more deserving.

  • Best Costume Design: This film should have been nominated instead of Napoleon. Poor Things won and deserved it.

  • Writing (Original Screenplay): It could have replaced May December, though Anatomy of a Fall rightfully won.

An Oscar snub of the year, Barry Keoghan's performance and the film's cinematography deserved nominations. This movie explores themes of wealth and infatuation, a familiar story, but with a tantalizing twist.

Everything about this movie draws you in—from the set to the characters and storytelling. The story begins at Oxford, where Oliver and Felix quickly become friends. Felix invites Oliver to stay at his opulent estate, and that's where the plot starts to unravel. We are introduced to Felix's eccentric, wealthy family and friends, who embody narcissism, superficiality, and melodrama.

The friends and family are played by a stunning cast, including Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Carey Mulligan. The backdrop gradually shifts from a luxurious, opulent Garden of Eden to a nightmarish labyrinth surrounded by Greek gods. The estate darkens as Oliver preys on his victims one by one. As the tension builds, you find yourself asking why, with no clear answer at the end. Love it or hate it, it’s a memorable movie. While it might not have won any awards, it certainly deserved recognition.

"It's murder on the dance floor. But you better not kill the groove"—let the music play.
